We have both spent years working inside organizations that said the right things.
They had mission statements about compassion. They hosted wellness trainings once a year and called it culture. They talked about supporting their staff while quietly watching the best people burn out and leave. We sat in those organizations, we saw what was happening, and at some point we both arrived at the same conclusion separately: this is not good enough.
That shared frustration is where The NIXX Project began.
Neither of us set out to build a coaching and consulting firm. Marissa spent years working directly with some of the most vulnerable populations you can encounter, people navigating addiction, domestic violence, human trafficking, and crisis. Sterling built his career inside behavioral health operations, compliance, and leadership, watching organizations struggle to hold their people and their mission together at the same time. We were practitioners before we were anything else. We still are.
What we kept noticing, in different roles and different organizations, was the same pattern repeating itself. The people who cared the most were the ones getting hurt the most. The leaders who wanted to do right by their teams had no real support for how to actually do that. The organizations that genuinely believed in their mission were slowly hollowing themselves out from the inside because the systems around their people were not built to sustain them.
Burnout was everywhere. Turnover was treated as inevitable. And the solutions being offered, a workshop here, a policy update there, were nowhere near the scale of the problem.
We did not want to add to the noise. We wanted to build something that took the problem seriously.
So we did.
Trauma-Informed at the Core
The NIXX Project is trauma-informed at its core, which means we start from the understanding that the people doing this work have often been through things themselves. The leaders running these organizations are carrying weight that most leadership frameworks never acknowledge. The staff in behavioral health settings, in nonprofits, in community programs, are absorbing other people’s pain as part of their job description. You cannot address burnout in these environments without understanding that reality first.
What We Do
Our work spans three areas. We coach individual leaders, managers stepping into new roles, executives who are exhausted and need a clear-eyed thought partner, professionals navigating transitions they did not entirely choose. We work with organizations to build healthier cultures, stronger operations, and leadership capacity that actually holds over time. And we train teams in practical, human-centered skill-building around burnout prevention, trauma-informed communication, and emotional intelligence.
What ties it all together is a belief that people and mission are not competing priorities. When you build organizations that genuinely care for the people inside them, the mission gets stronger too. We have seen it. It is not idealism. It is what happens when the internal conditions are right.
The People Behind It
Marissa brings clinical depth to everything we do. Her background in neuropsychology and her years of direct service work mean that our frameworks are not borrowed from the corporate world and lightly adapted. They were built from the inside out, shaped by people whose work involves real stakes and real human beings.
Sterling brings the operational side. Having spent years navigating compliance, program design, and the often unglamorous work of keeping organizations functional, he understands what gets in the way and what actually creates change at a systems level.
Together we built something we would have wanted when we were still inside those organizations wondering why it felt so hard.
What Comes Next
We are based virtually and work with clients nationwide. If you are an individual leader looking for support, a nonprofit trying to figure out why your best people keep leaving, or a behavioral health organization ready to build something more sustainable, we would love to talk. Discovery calls are always free and there is no pressure attached.
This blog, which we are calling Insights, is where we will share what we are learning and thinking about. We will write about burnout and compassion fatigue, about trauma-informed leadership, about the organizational patterns we see repeated across the sector and what actually interrupts them. We will be honest about what is hard and direct about what works.
We are glad you are here.
